Real LIfe

So a few days ago
I mentioned some lovely ladies
that I had been crushing hard on lately.

Well folks,
I'd like to say that one of those blog crushes
has officially been taken to the next level.

I met a blogger......in. real. life.

And as if we needed any more proof
of why I'm the suckiest blogger around town:
I didn't take a single picture of our encounter.

But that's only because
we spent the whole 2 hour lunch talking non-stop.
I love finding people that talk as much as me!
There was just no time for a picture.

Saturday I went to lunch with the lovely Lauren.
And it felt like we had been going to lunches together forever.

Of course, I was late,
because let's be real,
the in-real-life me is never on time.

(Even though it totally wasn't my fault.
Apparently no one else thinks it's normal to drive 5 miles over the posted speed limit.)

It's been a long time since I've gone on a "first date"
and I was very nervous.
But seriously y'all, it felt like I had known this girl my whole life.

She was so sweet and fun and it was so comfortable.

Lauren, thank you so much for meeting me!
I am so excited for this budding new friendship
and I see many more lunch/dinner/drink dates in our future!
Especially come August - tell Josh I am already preparing myself
to throw back some gluten-free treats at an ECU tailgate!

Linking up with Sami for Weekend Shenanigans.

Pit and Peak Vlog

Y'all, I am having such a love-hate relationship with this whole vlog thing.
On the one hand, they're really awkward (no matter how many you've done)
but on the other hand, they are SOOO fun.

This week's Pit and Peak Link Up was a vlog,
so obviously I had to participate.

Please forgive the up-the-nose shot.
Hopefully I don't have any "bats in the cave".

It's Okay

It's okay...that this is my second blog post today.
MIA no more.

It's okay...that I am beyond ready for Spring time.
I just want my grass to be green.

It's okay...that Willow has the stankiest breath in the world.

She's still da cutest dog eva doe.

It's okay...that I like Tierrable.
That girl says she was there for Sean, but I disagree.
She was there for attention and to maximize her 15 minutes of fame
which by golly, she did.

It's okay...that I turn the TV on one channel and leave it there for hours
no matter what's on, just for background noise.

It's okay....that as soon as that background noise turns to Judge Judy,
I have to change the channel.

It's okay...that I'm obsessed with painted wine bottles.
We won't talk about how many empty ones I have sitting around.

It's okay...that instead of folding laundry
I pinned pictures of painted porches.

One more reason Spring needs to hurry on up.

It's okay....that I am a control freak.
to the point that I have created a highly detailed list
for my new assistant.

It'x okay...that lately I've had a really hard time with prayer.
Like turning off my mind and really just talking to God.

It's okay...that Amanda at A Royal Daughter doesn't even know
how much her Prayer Dare is helping fix the above.

It's okay...that today's not Friday,
because it's close enough.

Its Ok Thursdays

Girl Crush

As of next month,
I will have been blogging for a year,
which is pretty exciting.

Throughout that year (and the several years before
being brave enough to start my own blog)
I've stumbled across some pretty amazing blogs
that belong to some pretty amazing ladies.

One of those is the lovely Erin herself at Living in Yellow.
This girl is like a blogging genius.
For one, she's hilarious.
Her blog has reached heights I'm sure she didn't even think possible.
She also came up with this pretty cool link up
that I'm sure 50 thousand other bloggers are participating in today.

And since, I have been feeling a little disconnected lately
I feel this is the perfect time for me to share the love with some of my favorite blogging ladies.

{1}

Erin at the newly transformed Two Thirds Hazel.

Even though we've never met in real life,
I know if we did, we would be best friends forever.
Not only is she cute as a button, girlfriend has a "tell-you-like-it-is/sarcastic" way of writing
that will literally leave you laughing out loud.
Like that one time she wrote about her Britney....er, well "Britneys" in general.
She throws back Blue Moons like it's nobody's business
and occasionally finds cute puppies on the streets of New York to cuddle.
You can read all about my future trip to New York to visit Erin here.
Seriously, I'm in love with this girl.

{2}

Bonnie at the Life of Bon.

(I mean she used to have pink hair. How could you not love her?)

I consider Bonnie to be like, a real writer.
Her blog posts usually mirror some of my exact same thoughts and ideas
only in a much more eloquent way.
Like the time she wrote about high expectations for teacher workdays.
Or the art of not being busy (something we should all try to do a little more often).
She's a fellow teacher too, so you know I love her for that
particularly when she gives classroom updates.
(It was really hard for me to pick my favorite classroom post. My advice would be to just go read them all.)

YOUR BLOG NAME

Bonnie also has got this really cool
blogging book club happening right now.
I, of course, signed up with eager excitement
and failed to read last month's book (whomp)
but there's still hope for March.

{3}

Taylor at the Daily Tay.

Yet another hilarious blogging genius.
I live for her Daily Tay's Best Week Ever Posts
She recently lost her job and as been fighting the return of her alter-ego,
however, I think she just needs to stop fighting it.
For one, Unemployed Girl sounds fun.
And for two, Taylor could definitely be a professional blogger.
Yep, she's that good!
I mean, hello? Look at The Browse.
She also has a super cute dog who's always having some adventure,
and you know I'm a sucker for adventurous, cute dogs.

{4}

Raven at Don't Quote the Raven.

Raven is one of the most controversial bloggers I know.
This girl says exactly what is on her mind and makes no excuses for it.
Reason number one why I love her.
Even if you don't agree with what she has to say,
you have to respect the fact that she doesn't give two shits about what anyone thinks.
I also love the fact that by reading her blog,
you can feel the love she has for her kids,
however, you're not dripping in sticky sweet "my babies are the best babies" nonsense afterward.
Raven is what I like to call a "real" mama who thinks her boys hung the moon
but still gets a good laugh when they get thrown off the snow tube
or have to go to the dentist.

{5}

Lauren at On a Lighter Note.

I started following Lauren's blog a few months ago
and have just grown to love her.
Not only is she is a fellow Eastern North Carolinian
but she is also the cutest little mama to 2-year-old Sawyer.
Lauren is kind of everything I'm not, which is another reason why I love her.
She's a big reader,
posts about affordable fashion often,
and is a self proclaimed terrible driver (oh wait, that is something we have in common).
She also has the best crafty ideas. I stole this one for my own home decor inspiration.
Basically, she's the bomb.com.
Go say hi!

{6}

Jamie at Simple Southern Ways is another blogger that I am quickly falling in love with.

How cute is she? She's currently planning her wedding
and I have a feeling it will be as southern and classy as she is.

{7}

Sheree at The Hartungs Blog.

First of all, she is absolutely gorgeous.
And that alone is enough reason for a girl crush.
But she also takes amazing pictures
and cooks delicious recipes.
Her blog, is like a breath of fresh air.

{8}

Whitney at I Wore Yoga Pants to Work.

Because let's be real,
who doesn't want to wear yoga pants to work?
Honestly, her weekly Whitney's What The? Wednesday posts
(say that three times fast)
is enough to keep me coming back for more.
Also, her tweets are almost more entertaining than her blog.
Almost.
She also breaks into her own house
and gets drunk at visits Disney World on the reg.

{9}

Kate at Set the Circus Down.

1. Her blog header has circus elephants in it.
2. She's the cutest pregnant lady I know.
3. She recently did an entire post of LOL! So True pictures. Hilarious.
And all so true.

{10}

Kristen at This Radiant Life.

Kristen is also currently planning her wedding,
but like all good brides
she has already realized the importance of wine throughout this process.
She also had some pretty insightful (and hilarious)
thoughts on time management the other day.

~

I'm going to stop there,
though I honestly could get keep going for days.
I've said it before, I like reading blogs.
Besides, all this girl loving is getting Robbie a little concerned.
I think the word "stalker" was thrown out there.
Pshhh. Silly boy.

Be sure to head on over and check out some other fun blog crushes.
Or better yet, link up your own!
Everyone loves getting love!

Hugs,

MIA

I have been so MIA lately.
And I wish I had a good excuse,
except I don't.

I promise to catch up on emails ASAP.
I also promise to catch up on blog reading
because, let's be real,
reading y'all's blogs is the best part of blogging.
le duh.

But until then,
I'll leave you with these warm and fuzzies.

{Sidenote: we played Freeze Dance at school yesterday,
and if you haven't witnessed 22 First Graders dancing to KidzBop,
you are missing out.
They've definitely got the moves like Jagger.}

Happy Humpday Batman!

Tasty Tuesday - I created my own recipe

Y'all - I think I have officially reached "big-girl-domestic diva" status.
If you remember last week, I linked up not one, but two Tasty Tuesday recipes.
Except neither one of them were very original, or inventive.

Well folks, today is about to be completely different.

Robbie has a late class one night a week.
So I don't usually plan a meal for that night.
Instead I usually try to mooch off my parents
or just whip up something for myself.

Well last week it was cold and rainy
I stayed at school later than usual
and I didn't feel like leaving the house once I finally got home.
Plus, I had all the ingredients already on hand for Tuna Noodle,
which is normally way too much for just me,
but leftovers for lunch sounded deeeeelicious.

So I got my noodles are ready to boil.
And realized I didn't have Cream of Mushroom,
a very crucial element to Tuna Noodle.
I was devastated, but still starving.
So I searched high and low and found some things
to literally "throw together".

I'm not sure what to call it
besides delicious.

**Oh and it was all gluten-free. One day, I'll stop being so pleasantly pleased when I can eat a completely gluten-free meal, but that day is not today.**

What you'll need:
- 1 box elbow noodles
- 4 oz. sour cream (nooooot a lot, I'm still trying to do the dairy-free thing too)
- chicken breast marinated in Italian dressing (nom)
- shredded cheese
- basil
**I got an amazing spice rack as a wedding gift. Well it's amazing to me, because I don't know up from down when it comes to spices. But I'm always so excited when I know how to incorporate one or more into a dish.**

What you'll do:
- Boil your pasta and drain the noodles
- Sautee your chicken
- Mix pasta with sour cream (just enough to coat the noodles, again not a lot)
- Stir in chicken
- Dash some pepper, a teeny bit of salt, and some basil.
**As with most spices, a little goes a looooong way. Just a word to the wise.**
- Heat in oven at 350 for about 8ish minutes (we're real technical over here, I know)
- Sprinkle cheese on top, cook for about 2 more minutes or until cheese is completely melted.

Eat up my friend - it is delish.

I also may or may not have had a side of zuchinni with it.
Who am I?

Hugs,

P.S. If this is already a real recipe that exists, just let me continue thinking I was being creative. I realize it's not suuuuuper tricky, but for the girl who lived off bagel bites and cereal forever it's a BIG step in the right domestic direction.

Those days that are actually fun

When I was in college I did what felt like a trillion internships.
My program was really good
about getting us into as many classrooms as possible.
Sometimes we were required to teach a lesson or two.
Sometimes we were solely there to observe.
But each time we were gaining exposure, networking,
and stealing learning new, great ideas.

By Junior Year we were placed in a classroom part time
and were able to begin forming a relationship with one teacher
and one set of students.
I thought I had died and gone to Heaven.
During this time we were responsible for teaching one to two mini-lessons a semester
based on what we had been learning in one of our methods classes.
These lessons were observed by either our cooperating teacher
or our supervisor and then were turned in for a grade.

Therefore, I made sure these lesson always rocked.

I made sure to involve each and every student in a new and different way
engaging every type of learner
going above and beyond with the innovativeness (if that's even a word)
and creativity of each and every lesson I was observed on.
It wasn't that hard, considering it was one lesson out of an entire day.

When I became a real teacher, I realized that planning
the most creative and innovative lesson imaginable
for each and every lesson is freaking hard.
And really just not possible.

{Disclaimer - this does not mean that not every lesson
should be meaningful and engaging.
Obviously, those two are a given.
It just means, not every lesson is going to be Pinterest-worthy.}

In college it was easy to spend an hour planning one Math lesson.
It was the only lesson I had to plan.
Now that I've got to plan one Math lesson for each day of the week
every week of the year,
along with Language Arts, Guided Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Writing
spending an hour plus on each one is just not feasible.

Fortunately that's where my FABULOUS team comes in.
We all plan together which is great because we can all share ideas,
focus on rocking one subject out and then sharing it with each other.

And occasionally,
those amazingly creative lessons come up
where you just want to brag about what you've been doing in your classroom.

{Disclaimer #2: I am all about being cutesy and fun with lessons in the classroom.
It's part of why I teach First Grade.
However, I am not all about arts and crafts just the sake of arts and crafting.
I like for things to be aligned with specific standards
and I believe in utilizing every minute of every day for teaching and learning something valuable.
I'll admit, some days I achieve this more than others.}

Without further adieu....

Look What Rigorous and Meaningful Things We've Been Doing

{1.}

We've been reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The real, seventh grade level, Wizard of Oz.
Well, we've been reading it out loud.
And our kids can't get enough of it.

Our whole Language Arts unit this quarter
is focused around it and The Winds of Change
based on our Common Core Bible

Seriously, this book has been the hugest help in planning this year.

We don't study weather anymore in First Grade (boo)
which obviously would have been perfect for the Winds of Change,
but we do study Rocks and Soil and how weathering and erosion affect them.

In the Wizard of Oz we're focusing on the change in characters
from the beginning of the story to the end of the story.
We're also focusing on the change in mood throughout the story
and how certain music and video clips can effect the mood.
We're also talking about change in vocabulary
and how using different words can change the perception of things.

Earlier this week, Dorothy melted the Wicked Witch.
And left a huge mess in our hallway.

Fortunately Mrs. Ruby (our magnificent janitor) was there to help us clean it up.

Some other fun resources that I've used and combined
for the Wizard of Oz study can be found here and here and here.

{2.}

Since it's Black History Month, we've been learning about famous Black Americans.
We've really tried to incorporate a variety of role models
one. to show a variety of role models
and two. to kind of step away from the typical Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks thing.
Not that they're not important, but there are a lot of others too.

Like Lebron James.

Okay, actually, I'll admit he was a bit of a stretch.
I mean I know he's a bomb basketball player and all
but he's not quite MLK JR. status.

However, the kids really enjoyed learning about someone they knew
and could relate to (and who was still alive).
They also loved seeing him in his 6'8" glory and measuring themselves
to see how tall we were in comparison, which is what we did above.

{3.}

I mentioned earlier that it was Read Across America week.
We lost the book competition.
Darn you Mrs. Barnes.
But we had fun nonetheless.
And I had a blast dressing up like my most favorite animal for the day.

I had every intention of taking a picture all by myself,
but today was actually a no good, horrible, terrible day so that didn't quite happen.
Also, I'm aware my trunk looks inappropriate - that's all part of the fun!

"I meant what I said, and I said what I meant.
An elephant's faithful 100%."

Documenting classroom activities on le blog is tough
because I'm sure it puts half of you right to sleep
and it's hard to show you the real fun of it all
without showing you my sweet kiddos.

But every once in a while, a little taste of my teaching life won't hurt.
Plus also, Robbie's been super busy with school this week
and has not been the superior listener he typically is.
Usually, these crazy excited classroom recaps are given to him nightly.

Now, I'm off to enjoy my Friday night
as I'm sure every teacher does
in yoga pants with a glass bottle of wine.

Hugs,
